Mallorca, September 26th
It was the first year of this ambitious event organised by the Mallorca Classic Week team and Port Adriano, and supported by the Classic Car Club, Driving Mallorca, and the American Car Club. Almost 150 participants and visitors with their classic cars, motorcycles and several classic yachts from eight nations took part. The action was spread over several days and was judged an overall success.
In principle there were three main events, kicking off with a BBQ at The Boat House in Palma on Wednesday, September 21st. This event opened up the weekly car meeting at this venue to cars new to the local scene. Among these was a 1957 BMW 507 sent to Mallorca Classic Week by BMW Group Classic from Munich. The Boat House provided a tasty BBQ which, together with pleasant evening weather and good live music, made for a very enjoyable opening event.
Thursday and Friday daytimes were reserved for pre-judging the cars entered for the Concours d’Elegance, and free pleasure drives around the island, guided by route maps provided by the organisers. On Friday evening, Sixt España hosted a great cocktail at La Terraza in Port Adriano.
The American Car Club launched events on Saturday with a full day based around their well-organised Elvis Presley Show and Pin-Up Girl competition, in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Mid-afternoon saw the start of Mallorca’s first International Concours d´Elegance presentation, located around the Philippe Starck building and culminating in the elegant prize-giving. Overall winner elected by the international jury joined by HRH Leopold Prinz von Bayern was an immaculate 1950 Mercedes 170 S Cabriolet from Germany, owned by Bernd Paasch. A female jury elected Mrs. Almudena Fernandez Hernandez to be the best-dressed lady in the contemporary style of the classic cars. Saturday’s programme ended with BMW Group celebrating its 100-year anniversary with a lively dinner-dance for the participants, sponsors and guests.
Sunday was Mallorca Sightseeing Drive Day. The cars took off from Port Adriano on an 80 km pleasure drive up through Puigpunyent to the famous Gran Hotel Son Net, for a coffee and refreshment stop, and then down through Port d’Andratx and Santa Ponsa, heading back to the start and a late lunch at the Harbour Grill in Port Adriano. The winner of the Mallorca Sightseeing Drive was Jan Coenen driving a 1959 MGA.
In summary it was a feast of cars and a full itinerary for participants and public alike. Next year the organisers plan the second edition of Mallorca Classic Week by Port Adriano, so mark September 20th-24th, 2017 in your diary now.
